DEFEND EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE THAT PROTECTS CHILDREN

WSU Must Hear from Thousands of Taxpayers — Not Just Activists

Academic Censorship Harms Evidence-based Medicine That Protected Children

Your voice is important in combating censorship.

Washington State University, a publicly funded institution, spent nine months rigorously reviewing and accrediting seven Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses on pediatric gender medicine — courses backed by more than 150 peer-reviewed studies that feature more than a dozen international experts.  They argue for a cautious approach to pediatric sex-trait modification, and do not agree with the undiscerning use of puberty-blockers, cross-sex hormones, and plastic surgery.  This judicious approach, now common in Europe, stands in contrast with the affirmation-only, out-of-date, heavily medicalized model in North America.

Then in one afternoon, activist organizations successfully pressured WSU to suspend these courses before any investigation even began. This is not about any concern with the course content containing “hate.” It’s about control. See the open letter from activists to understand what tax-paying citizens and parents are up against.

YOUR ACTION STEPS

1. Watch a SEGM courses clip (optional but powerful) Spend a little time learning one key scientific point.

2. Send your personal message to WSU - use your own words (see message sample and options below) Keep it about 300 words. Be firm, polite, professional.

3. Every message to WSU should ask for the prompt re-instatement of the SEGM courses and full transparency regarding the ACCME investigation.

4. Complete form below to show your support for evidence-based medicine. We’ll track impact and show WSU that thousands of community members urge them to stand firm for evidence-based medicine.

SAMPLE TEXT: Dear WSU, I am a [concerned citizen from Washington State/ mom of 5 children/ coach at a local school, etc] .   I am very concerned about the state of academic integrity at Washington State University following the suspension of CME status for the SEGM course series.  We applaud the University for initially accrediting the course after a rigorous vetting process that ensured scientific balance and educational rigor.  Now we urge the University to stand firm under pressure from activists and persevere in its highest mission, which is to seek truth and to protect academic freedom.  The Elson S. Floyd School of Medicine also has a duty to safeguard pediatric patients. Given that WSU is a public institution and that my tax dollars help pay for the medical education that Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine provides to medical learners, we kindly request that WSU

1) Promptly re-instate the SEGM Course Series. Be fully transparent regarding the ACCME investigation.

2) I agree with the signatories of the Spectrum Center coalition that Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine must teach evidence-based medicine.  Unlike Spectrum, I do not demand teaching a specific viewpoint regarding pediatric sex-trait modification.  Instead, I ask that the College of Medicine teach the fundamental principles of Evidence-Based Medicine to all students and residents.  The SEGM course does this, but it is not the only source for this essential skill for doctors.

3) If you are a doctor or other healthcare professional, you can say this point: I ask that all residents and medical students from Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, at graduation, be competent in reading, analyzing, and critically appraising systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines (CPGs).  They should be able to explain the main difference between a CPG and a medical society Policy Statement. They should understand the GRADE system.  They are expected to apply the same standards of evidence and ethics to the topic of pediatric sex-trait modification that applies to all other areas of medicine.
